Parenting: Raising Children in the Lord Scripture Writing/Reading Plan August 2026

This month our Scripture plan is about parenting, specifically, raising children in the Lord. Before we began, let's remind ourselves of 2 Timothy 3:16-17 which says, " All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, KJV) The Bible tells us that ALL Scripture is of God and is useful for teaching us, convicting us and correcting our ways as we are sanctified in Christ Jesus by the Lord our God. No matter what phase of life you are in right now, whether you are a parent or not, a spouse or not, young or seasoned, male or female, this Scripture plan is for all people and the Scriptures that we will study are all God-breathed and beneficial for everyone.

In this Scripture plan, we will study certain Scriptures to learn about the instructions that the Lord has given us for parenting our children. As we learn these instructions from the Lord and put them into practice, then we will glorify the Lord as we seek to raise our children according to His revealed will. In doing this we will receive the blessings that come with obeying God's Word, and we will receive these blessings in our lives and in the lives of our children. The Bible tells us that children are a heritage from the Lord and a blessing from Him. (Psalm 127:3) The Bible tells us that God commands us to believe in Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior and to love each other. 1 John 3:23 says, “And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.” (1 John 3:23, KJV) We are to put our faith in Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior to receive eternal salvation in Him (Romans 1:17, Romans 10:9) and we are to love others just as Christ has loved us. (John 15:12) God has given this command to all people including us and our children. 

In Romans 10:8-15 we read, “But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” (Romans 10:8-15, KJV) All those who believe in Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior are eternally saved in Him! (John 3:16, Romans 10:9) We are called, as believers in Christ, to share the gospel of faith in Christ Jesus with all people and this, of course, includes our own children and the children in our lives! Share the Gospel of Jesus with your children, teach them the Gospel and minister continuously to their hearts. We are instructed to do so, and it is a precious blessing to be the feet that bring the good news of the Gospel of Jesus to others including our precious children. 

Let us also remember the encouragement and instructions we receive from 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 which says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2 Corinthians 5:17-21, KJV) God instructs us to share the good news of salvation in Jesus, with all people. God has given us His ministry of reconciliation for sinners through Christ Jesus our Savior and we are, by God’s perfect grace, Christ’s representatives through whom He is making His appeal to all people. By the power of the Holy Spirit, Who lives in every believer, we implore people on Christ's behalf to be reconciled to God through faith in Christ Jesus! So, we must teach our children the Gospel of Jesus as we ought. We must be faithful servants of the Lord being able to present ourselves to Him as servants approved who do not need to be ashamed. We must handle the Word of Truth correctly. (2 Timothy 2:15) Let us serve the Lord our God with wholehearted, undivided devotion! (Psalm 119:80)

The Bible tells us in Deuteronomy 6:6-7 that, “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7, KJV) We are instructed to impress upon our children the instructions and commands of the Lord our God and we are to spend time in His Word with them day and night. We must also be faithful in prayer with our children. The Bible instructs us in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to, “Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17, KJV) 

Children learn so much from us just by the way we live our lives. The things we say, the tone we use, the attitudes we have, the way we treat others, the things we do or don’t do. This is another reason that we need to be mindful of the way that we live our lives. We are here for God’s glory, and we are to reflect God’s character and His heart. We must faithfully pray that the Holy Spirit, Who lives in every believer, will enable us to do this. We ourselves must spend time in God’s Word so that we may know what His Word says. This way we can share the Word with others, we can teach it to our children, and we ourselves can better live as God instructs us to live for His glory. We want to be godly examples to our children so that they will learn good and godly traits from us.

We must turn to the Lord our God for our every need. God alone can satisfy our needs, and He will faithfully meet them. (Philippians 4:19) We must faithfully and continuously turn to the Lord our God with our every need and our constant thankfulness and praise. As we faithfully do these things with our children, it can become a normal part of their daily life. To turn to the Lord in prayer and in His Word can become normal for them. If we pray every morning with our children and read a Verse or two, if we pray before every meal and do a daily devotional, if we spend time in the Word and pray to the Lord our God each night before bed, then this becomes a normal part of life for our children and they too will reap the benefits and receive the encouragement that God alone provides. Are you in need of encouragement? Turn to the Lord and find true encouragement. Are you in need of guidance? Turn to the Lord for guidance along the right path. Are you in need of comfort? Turn to the God of all comfort and receive it. Every need including truth, love, instruction, conviction as well as the repentance that must follow, forgiveness, teaching, guidance, hope, comfort, strength, encouragement, peace and every single need will only be satisfied by the Lord our God in Jesus.

Our memory Verse this month is Proverbs 22:6 which instructs us to, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6, KJV) We must train our children in the way of the Lord and when they are old, they will not turn from it. I praise the Lord that I can testify to this in my own life, and I praise Him alone for it. God blessed me with Christian parents through whom He taught me the Gospel of my salvation in Jesus Christ my Savior. I have fond memories of my mother reading Bible stories with me and praying with me before bed. When I feared the dark, she would turn on Gospel music that I would listen to as I fell asleep and through this, I learned that God is my comfort. We would pray as a family. My parents encouraged me to be in God’s Word, and they would spend time in the Word with me. God has enabled my dad to be an earthly father who, by the power of the Holy Spirit in him, reflects the character of our Heavenly Father. He lovingly disciplined me as a father should. Our Heavenly Father lovingly disciplines us for our good so that we will become more like Christ Jesus our Savior for God’s glory. (Hebrews 12:4-13) I can testify to Proverbs 22:6 and all the praise and honor and glory belong to the Lord my God!

We cannot take credit for the good that is done in us and through us. The good in us is only Christ in us! The fact that my parents are, by God’s provision and grace, Christian parents through whom God trained me in His ways is not of their own doing. This is completely the work of the Lord our God and a blessing from Him. The fact that I did accept Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior, is not of my own accord, I am saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9, KJV) To God be all the glory! God alone can save! (Acts 4:12)

Throughout my lifetime, I have been blessed with countless other believers in my life. God shared with me the Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ through other believers. God shared His Word with me through them, and He encouraged me with His love through believers in Jesus. So, you may be sitting there thinking to yourself, I don't have children. Well, you most likely have children in your life in some capacity, and you can be encouraged that God has placed them in your life for a reason, even if just briefly. God is blessing you with the opportunity to witness to these children. You may also be sitting there thinking, I was not raised with Christian parents. My absolute best friend, and many other believers that I know, did not grow up with this either but by God’s grace alone, they put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. Again, God alone can save! I want to stress this so I will share this Verse from Ephesians 2 with you again, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9, KJV) God offers salvation to ALL people. (Titus 2:11) God’s gift of salvation in Jesus must be received by faith. “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.” (Romans 1:17, KJV)

Let us not get discouraged. No one is perfect; we all sin, and we all need to grow in the Lord. Believers in Jesus can be encouraged by Psalm 103:10 which tells us that God does not treat us as our sins deserve. “He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.” (Psalm 103:10, KJV) The Lord our God is full of compassion, He does not withhold His mercy from His children, and He is the God of all comfort. (Psalm 103:8, Psalm 40:11, 2 Corinthians 1:3) As believers in Jesus, we must not feel as though we should try to hide from God because of our iniquities. We can't hide anyway (Hebrews 4:13) and God already knows all of our sins and our iniquities. Rather, we must run to God confessing our sinful ways and admitting our need for Him and His grace and love! Run to Him and receive what you need! (Hebrews 4:16) Remember this Verse from 1 Thessalonians which says, “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:24, KJV)
