This month of February our Scripture Plan is all about training in righteousness. This month many people from across the globe will gather to watch the Olympic Games. These athletes go into strict training to prepare for the tasks ahead of them. God tells us in His Word that physical training is of some value but training in godliness has eternal value both in this life and the life to come for those who are in Christ Jesus our Savior. We learn this from 1 Timothy 4:8 which says, For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come." (1 Timothy 4:8, KJV) The athletes that will compete in the up-and-coming games compete for a prize that will not last eternally, though still a blessing from God. As children of God, in Christ Jesus our Savior, we are striving toward an eternal prize in Christ Jesus that will last forever! This is not something we are able to do on our own, but this is done in us by the Lord our God in Christ Jesus our Savior. 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 tells us, "Knowye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible" (1 Corinthians 9:24-25, KJV)
Our memory Verse for this month is 2 Timothy 3:16-17 which says, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." (2 Timothy 3:16-17, KJV) God alone is able to teach us His commands, convict us of our wrongful ways, correct our ways, and through this process, He is training us in righteousness to be more like Jesus Christ our Savior. Let us press on toward our goal in Christ Jesus our Savior, trusting in the Lord our God with all of our hearts. Let us cast all of our anxiety onto God and stand firm in Him alone, rejoicing in the Lord our God out of sincere hearts and the pure hearts that He gives every believer in Jesus Christ our Savior. Let us run our race that the Lord has given us, with confidence in Christ alone, so that at the end of this life here on earth we can truly say that we have fought the good fight of the faith. As 2 Timothy 4:7-8 says, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." (2 Timothy 4:7-8, KJV)
Every believer is to be a living sacrifice pleasing to the Lord our God for His glory, and by the grace of God, that is what we are and will be! Romans 12:1-2 says, " I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." (Romans 12:1-2, KJV) Let us forget the old way we used to live in and press on toward the goal in Christ Jesus our Savior, praying that God will continue to shape us and mold us into who He desires us to be for His glory and our good. Every believer is now a new creation in Christ Jesus. Now our old self is gone and the new is here! We read this truth in 2 Corinthians 5:17 which says, "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." (2 Corinthians 5:17, KJV) Training can be so difficult and can seem unpleasant at the time but it is absolutely necessary in order to meet the goal and win the prize! As living sacrifices for God, we desire to present ourselves to Him as a sacrifice who is pleasing to Him. We can be confident in the Lord our God knowing that He is faithful and He will continue to sanctify us and shape us in Him for His glory and our good. Again, we know that training can be difficult, but we need not be discouraged because we are told in 1 Thessalonians 5:24 that, "Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it." 1 Thessalonians 5:24, KJV) Also, we are told in Romans 8:28, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28, KJV)
Before we can be a living sacrifice holy and pleasing to God and be trained to be more like Jesus, we must first accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior. It is only by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone that we receive eternal salvation in Jesus Christ our Savior. Once we are in Christ Jesus, by faith alone, we are then able to be trained by God to become more like Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit Who lives in every believer. If you want to learn about how to accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, then visit this page here on the Good News Indeed blog: How to Receive Salvation | Good News Indeed.
We can and should faithfully pray that God will continue to teach us His ways, convict us of our sins, and correct us in our ways, therefore, sanctifying us to be more like Christ Jesus our Savior. Rember, the Lord our God Who calls us is always faithful and He will do it! As we spend time in God's Word, studying the Scriptures outlined here in this Scripture plan, we can be encouraged knowing that God's Word is alive and active, and through His Word, He is training us to become more like Him for His glory and our good! Enjoy spending time in God's Word learning all about the important and precious process of sanctification in Christ Jesus our Savior.
