This month, our Scripture plan is about Obedience. The very first step of obedience to God is to believe in His one and only Son, Jesus. 1 John 3:21-23 says, “Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.” (1 John 3:21-23, KJV) As we read in 1 John, we are commanded to believe in the Name of Jesus. Even if we were to never spend a single moment in the Word of God, we would not have any excuse to claim that we don't know God’s commands. Scripture tells us in Romans 1:18-20 that, “ For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” (Romans 1:18-20, KJV) Also, in Romans we read, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:” (Romans 3:23-24, KJV) Therefore, no one is without excuse and we all sin, falling short of God’s glory. We all need salvation in Jesus!
It is only through faith in Jesus that we receive forgiveness of our sins, reconciliation to God and eternal life. (John 3:16, Acts 4:12) John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16, KJV) Only through faith in Christ can you please God and obey His commands. If you have not put your faith and trust in Jesus to save you, then do not let another moment pass and do so now! (2 Corinthians 5:20-21) You can visit this page on the blog to learn more about accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. How to Receive Salvation | Good News Indeed
After we have put our faith and trust in Jesus to save us from our sins, we then receive the Holy Spirit Who lives in every believer, in Christ. Ephesians 1:13-14 says, “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1:13-14, KJV) We then have the power to obey God. Through God’s Word we learn of God’s commands and what He desires from us. This reminds us of the importance of spending time in God’s Word. We can reference some of our previous memory Verses which say, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, KJV) So as we spend time in God’s Word, He teaches us His commands, He convicts us of our sinful ways, in which we do not keep His commands, and He corrects us in our ways as He trains us to become more like Jesus Christ our Savior.
Only in Christ can we obey God’s commands. Scripture tells us in Micah: “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” (Micah 6:8, KJV)
Again, as believers in Christ we have the Holy Spirt living in us. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, KJV) We are instructed to honor God with our bodies, and this includes every bit of our being! We are instructed in Romans 12:1-2 to: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:1-2, KJV)
God has blessed us with His free gift of grace and mercy in Christ Jesus our Savior and He has given us eternal life in His name! That is the most precious gift a person can receive! Because we have received this eternal gift from the Lord our God, we are spurred on to then offer every bit of ourselves to Him as living sacrifices who are holy and pleasing to God alone! (Romans 12:1-2) We desire this because only God can satisfy our souls and only God meets our every need. (Philippians 4:19) God alone satisfies our souls so to glorify Him is satisfying to us! Having received these blessings, we want to please the Lord! We are not to conform to the ways of this world but, in Christ, we are being renewed day by day and we are being conformed to the image of Christ Jesus our Savior for God’s glory and our good! This is the ultimate obedience to God, to believe in the Name of His Son Jesus and, through Him, live in humble obedience to God as living sacrifices pleasing to Him! It is only by the power of the Holy Spirit in us, through Jesus Christ our Savior, that we can be this sacrifice to God. Let us faithfully pray to do so always and remember that God is always faithful even when we are not! As we read in Philippians: “Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” (Philippians 1:3-6, KJV)
Praise be to the Lord our God Who loves us and gives us the eternal blessing of salvation for our souls through faith in Jesus Christ our Savior! As we prepare to complete this Scripture plan this month, let our hearts be encouraged by this passage of Scripture from 2 Peter which says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” (1 Peter 1:3, KJV) God has given us everything that we need to live a godly life in Christ Jesus our Savior. Do not be discouraged and don’t forget what we read in Hebrews: “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16, KJV) We do fall short of obedience to God but let us approach God’s throne of grace with confidence in Jesus for we will receive mercy and find grace. Praise be to the Lord our God that He does not count any of our sins against us in Christ Jesus our Savior!
