This month we are going to study Matthew 5:3-12. We will dive deeper into this passage of Scripture by studying other Verses that will deepen our understanding of these Verses from Matthew 5. As we study these Verses in Matthew, we should know that to be blessed is to have true spiritual joy and the ultimate distinctive spiritual security and well-being that all people who have salvation in Jesus Christ receive. This passage of Scripture really challenges us to evaluate our hearts. All of Scripture does this. We read this in 2 Timothy, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, KJV) Again we read in Hebrews, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” (Hebrews 4:12-13, KJV)
In this passage of Scripture we are taught to be humble, to be sincerely sorrowful over our sins, to be submissive to God, to deeply desire righteousness, to be pure in heart, to be at peace with others, and to persevere in times of opposition. To live in this manner is to glorify God and to reflect His character and His heart. A person can only have a pure heart in Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. It is only through Christ in us that we can have pure thoughts, attitudes, actions and words. We read in Galatians, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.” (Galatians 2:20-21, KJV) All those who accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior receive eternal life in Him. (John 3:16, Romans 10:9) Only then can a person have a pure heart and receive the blessings outlined here in this passage of Matthew 5:3-10.
The Bible tells us that every bit of the human heart is always evil. We read in Genesis, “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” (Genesis 6:5, KJV) Again we read in Jeremiah, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9, KJV) With this in mind, we can see, and understand, that we are, of course, convicted of our sins as we read this passage from Matthew 5 because we know that our hearts fall short of these instructions. Romans 3:23-24 says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:” (Romans3:23-24, KJV) Just as we read earlier from 2 Timothy, Scripture teaches us, convicts us, corrects us, and trains us to be more like Jesus. Just as in all Scripture, we are taught these instructions from God, we are convicted of our short comings, we understand that only in Christ can our sinful ways be corrected so that we may become like Jesus.
No one should think that the gift of salvation in Jesus has not been offered to them or that there is no hope for them to be saved. Titus 2:11 says, “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,’ (Titus 2:11, KJV) Read this encouraging passage of Scripture from Romans 7.
What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. (Romans 7:7-25, KJV)
We are all wretched in our sinful nature. Who will rescue us from the law of sin and death? Thanks be to God Who does this through Jesus Christ our Savior! Salvation in Jesus is a gift from God that must be received by faith. We read this in Romans 1, “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.” (Romans 1:17, KJV)
Conviction is difficult at times becase it reveals to us all the ways that we sin against the Lord our God, but conviction is a blessing from the Lord. When God reveals our sins to us then, our ways can be corrected, and we can become more like Jesus Christ our Savior unto the glory of the Lord our God. We can pray Psalm 51:10 which says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10, KJV) Remember, God is faithful! Be encouraged by this Verse in Philippians which says, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13, KJV) Also, be encouraged by this Verse in 1 Thessalonians which says, “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:24, KJV)
Beloved, enjoy studying the Scriptures outlined here in this Scripture plan as you grow in the Lord our God!
